ANKLE FRACTURES
Foot & Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma is skilled in diagnosing and treating ankle fractures. Ankle fractures are very common and occur when an area of the ankle bone is stressed to the point of splitting or shattering. A fractured ankle can range from a simple break in one bone to several fractures that can force your ankle out of place.
Causes
Broken ankles affect people of all ages. They can occur as a result of a twisting injury or from a direct blow to the ankle. The most common causes of broken ankles include:
- Twisting or rotating your ankle
- Impact during a car accident
- Tripping or falling
- Rolling your ankle
Symptoms
In some cases, a severe ankle sprain can feel the same as a broken ankle, therefore it’s important to be evaluated by a physician for a proper diagnosis and treatment. The most common symptoms of a fracture in the ankle are pain and swelling. Additional symptoms include:
- Immediate and severe pain
- Swelling and bruising
- Ankle tenderness
- Inability to place weight on the injured foot
- Ankle appearing deformed or out of place
Treatments
Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma offers diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions, including ankle fractures. Our team of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and athletic trainers are committed to helping patients find relief and return to the highest level of activity possible.
Nonsurgical and surgical treatment options are available and depend on the type and severity of the fracture. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Our orthopedic surgeons are experts in foot and ankle arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure in which small instruments and a thin, flexible medical device with a camera pass through an incision the size of a small Band-Aid. After surgery, our physical therapists guide each patient through a personalized rehabilitation program to restore strength and mobility.
