Morton’s Neuroma
Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma provides expert diagnosis and treatment of Morton’s neuroma. Morton’s neuroma is a condition that involves the thickening of the tissue that surrounds the digital nerve leading to the toes. It occurs as the nerve passes under the ligament that connects the toe bones in the forefoot.
Causes
Morton’s neuroma most frequently develops between the third and fourth toes, usually in response to irritation, trauma or excessive pressure, such as from running or wearing high heels. The occurrence of Morton’s neuroma is 8 to 10 times greater in women than in men. Additional causes include:
- Trauma to the toe
- Tearing the corners of nails
- Shoes that do not fit properly
- Toenails that are not cut correctly. Toenails that are trimmed too short or round may cause the nail to grow downward into the skin.
Symptoms
Because Morton’s neuroma occurs deep inside the foot, there are normally no external signs to look out for. Instead, most symptoms begin internally, including:
- Sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot that may radiate into the toes
- Pain that intensifies with activity or wearing tight or narrow shoes
- Numbness in the ball of the foot or toes
- The sensation of a pebble in a shoe of a fold in a sock
Treatments
Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma offers diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions, including Morton’s neuroma. Our team of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and athletic trainers are committed to helping patients find relief and return to the highest level of activity possible.
Initial treatment options for Morton’s neuroma are nonsurgical and may include changes in footwear, custom orthotics or medication. If conservative treatments do not relieve symptoms after some time, surgical options may be suggested. With surgery, a small proportion of the nerve can be resected, or the tissue around the nerve can be released.
