Diabetic Shoes
Foot & Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma offers a wide variety of diabetic shoe options. Patients with diabetes, pre-existing foot disease, multiple foot deformities and those who are risk ulcerating their feet can all benefit from customized diabetic shoes. The primary goal of diabetic shoes and therapeutic footwear is to prevent foot complications, which can include strain, foot ulcers, calluses, or even amputations for patients with diabetes or poor circulation.
We work directly with Dr. Comfort to provide a variety of customized diabetic shoe options that you will want to wear! Our designs are stylish, comfortable and contemporary, and they come in a range of colors and styles. Whether you choose boots, dress shoes, casual shoes, walking shoes or sandals, each style incorporates several important design factors, including:
- Extra Depth – accommodates any potential swelling, as well as custom orthotics.
- Protective Shoe Box – protects toes from all directions.
- Shank – which adds extra support to the arch area of the shoe.
- Heel Counter – provides maximum foot support by cradling the heel to reduce over-pronation and prevent heel slippage.
How the process works:
During your appointment, we’ll use a specialized iPad scanner to take images of your feet. Then, you’ll select your favorite shoe style(s) from our catalog of options. Once you’ve made your decision, we’ll place your order and anticipate the arrival of your new shoes!
Custom diabetic shoes take approximately 4 weeks for construction and delivery. Once your shoes arrive, you’ll come back to our office for a custom fit appointment. If for any reason you do not like your shoes, or if they don’t fit right, we’ll have 30 days to request a return or replacement.
Diabetic shoes are covered by Medicare. If utilizing Medicare, you will need to be seen by a primary care provider at least 6 months before ordering your shoes. We will send your provider forms to sign and once those are returned, we’ll be able to order your shoes.
