Flatfeet
Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma can diagnose and treat flat feet in children and adults. Flatfeet, also referred to as fallen arches, is a postural deformity in which the arches of the foot to collapse, causing the entire sole to come into complete or near-complete contact with the ground. Nearly 30% of the general population have an arch that simply never develops in one or both feet.
Causes
In most cases, flatfeet occurs when one or of both of the arches do not develop during childhood. Flatfeet may also develop after an injury or from the simple wear-and-tear stresses of age. Additional causes include:
- Trauma to the toe
- Tearing the corners of nails
- Shoes that do not fit properly
- Toenails that are not cut correctly. Toenails that are trimmed too short or too round may cause the nail to grow downward into the skin.
Symptoms
Most patients have no signs or symptoms associated with flatfeet. Over time, this condition may alter the alignment of your legs, which can contribute to problems in your ankles and knees. Others symptoms of flatfeet include:
- Pain in the heel or arch area
- Pain that worsens with activity
- Swelling along the inside of the ankle
