NERVE SURGERY
Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma is a leader in treating nerve generated pain or damage as it relates to the lower extremities. This often includes treating patients who have been told nothing can be done for them.
Causes
Damaged nerves can be the result of a disease (diabetes), injury, infection, growths, environment issues, medicines or a genetic predisposition. Nerves that are affected by swelling or compression are often the result of a tumor or inflammation of the area around the nerve. Conditions such as Morton’s neuroma or tarsal tunnel syndrome can also place nerves in the feet under extreme pressure.
Symptoms
As varied as the causes, the telltale signs and symptoms of painful or damaged nerves span from weak muscles to extreme pain, with many in between. If any of the following symptoms occur in addition to muscle pain, it may signify nerve trouble:
- Pain that doesn’t go away
- Sharp or dull “shooting” sensation, or an electric shock shooting up or down the leg
- Muscle weakness in the area of the pain
- Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold
- The feeling of walking on a little rock
- Numbness between toes
- The feeling of tingling or burning on the bottom of the foot
Treatments
The Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Oklahoma offers diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions, including nerve surgery. Our team of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and athletic trainers are committed to helping patients find relief and return to the highest level of activity possible.
Once conservative measures have been exhausted, nerve surgery may be recommended as the best course of action to relieve pressure and restore your feet. During the procedure, the nerve will be preserved by expanding the area around it. This is called a release, primarily because the nerve is being released from the pressure that caused the symptoms initially.
